Spider mites are a common problem in the worm bin, especially if the bin is kept on the wet side. Mite populations can bloom and compete with the worms for the food stock, keeping the worm from coming up and eating. By putting down larger pieces of food that the spider mites are particularly attracted to you can deplete the population by trapping them on the food and removing them from the bin.
